Identify wire leads?

Post by obscure44 » Sun Apr 28, 2013 11:14 am

Hello! Finally resurrecting my old '66 CA77 305 project. Even with everyone's abundant help here a few years back, I wasn't able to get the Dream up and going. Turns out though that the primary issue with it running rich was the Keyster carb kits as of 2008 were sold with oversized jets. Now they're advertised as "Now, with stock size jets" :/ Tired working on it, a friend took the bike for a while, rebuilt the carb one last time, and it apparently ran but poorly through parts of the powerband (not sure, I didn't actually see it running). Had another Honda tech look at, says best guess is an electrical component is testing "good/working" but not performing "well." Short of replacing a component at a time, it was returned to me as "mystery issue."

I'll be cleaning the carbs, getting a new battery etc. Depending on the lingering issue, may try to troubleshoot that, or just go electronic ignition.

Question: I saw these two leads coming from the headset. Not hooked up to anything presently, can anyone identify what they're supposed to go to?

Thanks!
David

Hi David - Those are leads from the original condenser; the flat connector goes to the points and the bullet connector to a lead from the coil. But... It appears that you have a replacement condenser mounted somewhere other than the stock position (on top of the head). It's not uncommon to find replacement condensers mounted in strange places on the Dreams since they are hard to get at in the original position.

Thanks! Embarrassingly enough, I'm the one that actually replaced the condenser and left the old leads there. That was a few years back and apparently I forgot :)

Thanks again,
David
