If someone didn't have the tools or access to such things, what would your recommend for cosmetic upgrade on the engine?
sandblast or bust?
Motor Paint for CB and CL 77 restore?

Would blasting with silica sand work also or would it be too abrasive? I have acess to a small pot blaster and a large industrial blaster also. And also the krylon dull aluminum paint - the aluminum paints I used in the past I was not impressed with. I would paint them and even days later if I would touch it the aluminum color would get on me. Is this paint the same way?
As funds are less available for my superhawk, and riding season is getting closer here in the high country, I'm straying away from my concept of doing the superhawk restore to original and just thinking of doing my own thing with it. I've been looking at a lot of bikes with matte finishes on the paintjob and thought it looked swell in it's own way. Considering that for my hawk. Also these bikes often had matte black finishes on the engine, which i'd imagine could be done yourself with some bbq grill paint, it's made to withstand the heat. but i'm not sure how offensive this will be to other 305 riders :p though i've never seen another here.
Silca sand would be too abrasive. You can buy a bag of glass beads, and use it in your pot. It's around 25-30 bucks a bag. The krylon dull aluminum won't come off on your hands. I personally use rustoleum hight temp silver, with an automotive clear urethane on top. Another option I will be trying is to bead blast, and clear coat only. As far as the matte black finish, it's up to you what you think will look good.
davomoto haha yeah, well it's just paint. worst case scenario, i do what i could have done before... blast it and rechrome it. BTW, i painted my engine block and my exhaust headers (not sure if that's what they are called :p) with some flame resistant matte black paint as recommended on another site for painting your exhaust. Looks great imo. did 3 coats with decent intervals between them. If they crack with time, i'll sand it, wait longer between coats, ride for 1000 miles, then do a light sanding and do 3 more light coats. few old guys claim that's the way to go. I'll post pics later.
