Sunday ride on the CA77Sunday ride on the CA77In an effort to help step up traffic on this site I'll highlight my ride from last Sunday.
The temp was about 65. Fired up the CA and headed into town to top up on gas and meet up with someone to make our way up to Hayward, WI. Its about 50 miles north of me. Its also a tourist trap thats usually crawling with visitors who have made their way up from Chicago or the Twin Cities. Anyway we meet up and get on the road. I'm leading and he's following on his '95 Virago with a sidecar. All is good for the first 10 miles or so but then I get this feeling like the bike is working pretty hard to maintain speed. Slowly my speed creeps down into the 40's and I downshift to maintain speed. Not good. So another mile or two I make it to a gas station and pull in. I notice something right away. The old CA is really hard to push.I try the foot brake lever and there is no movement. The back brake is dragging pretty heavily. So I whip out my multi tool and back the brake rod adjuster off 2 turns. Rolls easy and the brakes still work. Thought about what damage may have been done but decided to press on since it couldn't have been to bad. Well the bike had renewed life and we were carving up the twisties like only a CA77 can. I even passed a few cars that were blocking my view of the fall colors. We made it to our destination and found a parking spot about 3 blocks from where we actually wanted to go. But as it turns out I noticed that after I parked the bike and removed my helmet that this was the spot I was destined for. There spray painted on the wall was a single word, "Dream". Kinda weird. Kind of a poor picture. A friend took it with a weird camera setting and I had to adjust it a bit to actually be able to see anything. Anyway we ate, we talked, and then we rode 50 miles back home. That trip bumped the old Dream to well over 2000 miles in the last 4 months. Not to bad for 42 year old bike. The only problems to date were a broken clutch cable, that brake adjustment, and changing the spark plugs a couple of times.(still runs a little rich on the top end) Oh, and a few oil changes. Neat storyKevin.I have been riding my bike on some cold mornings(48 degrees at times) after the bike sat out all night and still started easy.I was out running errands on my CA77 this afternoon also.Plan on taking it to work again tonight. Was haveing a problem though with the clutch grabbing when stopped, but was able to adjust at lever to fix that problem.I bought a set of new tires from JC Whitney a few weeks ago and will have to put those on this winter.I have been running 3.00x16's the last two summers with no problems, but the back is about done and front is still like new.Bought 3.25x16's in the universal tread.Nead to get the rear rim trued though since I had torn it apart to clean it up and never could get it trued myself.Joe
I went for a Sunday morning ride as well yesterday on my 1966 CA78. Ran like a champ over the course of 110 miles on twisty roads north of Baltimore, Maryland. Not too oppressively hot, very light traffic, plus found time for a coffee and an apple turnover at a small coffee shop....ah bliss! Of course the best part was blasting by a group of Harley riders on the Beltway on the way home....go Dreams go!
I could tell they were Harley riders from 1/2 mile away -- one guy had his arms way up in the air and looked like a giant sail going down the Beltway....how do guys ride any distance with those crazy ape hangers????? As well, why do they tend to start their rides at about noon, when it's about 9 jillion degrees out???? That's interesting about the clutch cables breaking....I had that happen once on my SuperHawk, but fortunately I was about a block from my mechanic, so I was okay. But, it necessitated rerouting of the cable so that it was a much gentler bend (kinda flappin' in the breeze a bit, but it's better than going under the tank). I know that some guys will look at it and say "That's not the way they routed the cable back in '66!", but it's much easier on the hand and kinder to the cable. Plus maybe the fact that I'm using Magura levers might have something to do with it too. Do you think it's just poor quality that made your cable break? I'd think that there'd be room under one of your side covers for an extra one, or maybe even under the seat?
Sunday ride and clutch cable questionI've had my dream about a month and a half now. Bought it from the original owner with about 4000 miles on her. Spent the past month going over, adjusting, lubing and cleaning everything. Finally got my antique tag in mail last week and I did my first Sunday ride this past weekend. I's a nimble little bike through the twistys and held her own on a small stretch of highway though I didn't push it too much. Put about 70 miles on her, got quite a few stares, one guy even pulled up next to me and said 'that's the coolest ride he's ever seen'. I see some comments regarding the lutch cable. Is that something that tends to break frequently? After my ride my only complaint was tender left hand fingers from pulling that clutch in. Is it due to the routing? I have a new clutch cable I put on her and the clutch appears to operate correctly. Any feedback is welcome.
