Rare 1960 C72- "A" model on ebay

Hi Everyone,
I'm selling a C72 project on Ebay, but it seems that it is pretty rare with it's "A" vin. It has matching numbers too: C72E-A10046 and C72-A10046 . Somebody thought the "A" meant "America," and was in the number section for one year (1960) until the model designation adopted the "A" and became CA72. Kind of interesting. It's cheap if someone wants it!

Yes, I've been looking at your bike on eBay. It is indeed an early US spec C72-A.

I have it's UK spec 1960 sister and it's bigger US sister, a 1960 C77-A. Very interesting that yours has matching numbers, too. That's quite unusual.

Is the paint a flat red or is it a candy color? My C72 is candy and the paint is in wonderful condition for over 50'years old.

Thanks for the reply. The color is unusual. It's not just red, it's like burgandy with a little candy sparkle. I'm sure it was pretty flashy at one point, now it's a bit faded. It's a great project that I've held on to for about a decade, but now I doubt I'll ever get to it.

Yes, my 1960 C72 is that color. Photos do not do it justice. Mine has lasted really well and I could tell its originality as it still has the dealer transfer pasted over it...

Another interesting feature of these is the upper rear shock covers are metal, not plastic.

I hope someone picks up your project and does it justice..

Wow thats very cool! The number on it: C72E-A10046 means its the 46th one made thats low man. Realy cool find.

There actually were very few of the wet sumps in any configuration built in 1960 (that's what the 'A' means, a 1960 model, following them running out of digits when '9' past away at the end of the 1959 model year). There were more 1960 model dry sumps, but even then only a few were shipped to the US.

Over here (The Netherlands) they used the dry sump type numbers for the early wet sump dreams, i have two here with framenumbers like C77-60-10...
The engine numbers start with C77-01..

The explanation with the A for the US market did sound acceptable to me, or maybe the difference has to do with the handlebars, on my bike/frame the flat pressed steel bars are mounted, maybe the A stands for the other type bars..
