Race ignition preferances?

Post by bfd402 » Thu Feb 18, 2010 8:19 am

Are there any ignitions folks have used and liked on the track other than a PVL? I'm leaning towards self generating but am open to all suggestions. With PVL's trading in the 800$ neghborhood now other options are attractive
thanks

I have used stock (well not so stock) points, Motoplat, Dyna S and Suzuki GSX250 twin ignitions(crank mounted)

Next time I'm going with Ignitech if I use battery power and HPI if I go self generating.

Ignitech is fully programmable state of the art and comes from eastern Europe. HPI comes form Belgium. I suspect that HPI uses a PVL magneto and their own CDI boxes.

I'd really like a TZ or RS system with dual pickups. They are small, light and powerful - but not fully programmable, so I'd need a new Ignitech type CDI.

Thanks for the ideas. I just stumbled onto the GS250 last week but am unfamiliar with the Ignitech and HPI. Where are you located Teazer? Is this stuff only availible in Europe?

At this moment I'm still on stock points and coils as I wanted to see if I liked the bike on the track, and I do, so I'd like to develope it a bit.

pvl ignition

Dear BFD402. If you Google pvl ignitions you will find on their online shop that the ignition you require would cost you approx. US$ 410.00. Really a very good price for a very good ignition. All the best Jerry

Bill, Good info from Jerry.

Here's another PVL reference. This one is for a TZ which rotates the other way, but is indicative.

I'm just north of Chicago, and am used to going to wherever I need to go to source good parts.

PVL are distributed in teh US by Penton in Ohio. Rick Merhar at www.accu-products.com used to be an agent. That's one of our TZ parts sources.

THat's a good price.
THe last quote I got from a US source was about $800, which did include a mounting plate but a $400 mounting plate is a bit much! $800 is just too much considering this is pretty much a stock motor. A local builder in this area had a very difficult time dealing with Penton, to the point where he won't order anymore stuff.
I'm told that PVL's are rotation sensitive so the CB350 version could be used if a couple of leads are reversed. Don't know if that's true or myth.
THanks for the replies, it all helps

pvl ignition

Post by jerry » Thu Feb 18, 2010 6:28 pm

Dear bfd402, The twin cylinder pvl classic racing unit is 280 euro + 7 euro postage . The igniton is a analogue unit and must be used with non resistor spark plugs and caps. The unit is not direction sensitive and has timing marks for clockwise or anti clockwise. there is a retarding factor in the ignition and between 8000 and 12000 it is approx 3 degrees. You will need to make a mounting plate and it would be a good idea to put a keyway in the rotor so that once the ignition has been set up and tested and marked you will not have to reset the ignition again. All the best Jerry
