Race ignition preferances?I run one of the PROBE electronic setups along with a small SLA battery on my race bike and did not have any problem what so ever. When I get finished with the new engine I will be replacing the battery with a capacitor like I run on my Triumph VINDURO/Cross Country bike. I as well as 2 other guys on our team run this setup and we have ZERO problems, first kick as long as you dont use re-cleaned spark/sparking plug. I dont remember the mf. rating on the cap. but it is a pretty common part that is often referred to in the Brit bike world as a Blue Thing on a Spring.
I had looked into a PVL setup that is bolt on ready to go for $800 bucks but couldnt justify the cost to advantage ratio. If someone is interested in the PVL setup PM me and I will give the guys number. georGe

teazer,
Have you used the Ignitech ignition on a cb77? I contacted them after reading your post and they told me I needed these parts: "unit TCIP4 (for details see to http://www.ignitech.cz/english/tcip/tcip.htm ) 2x pickup S01 pulse rotor this is suitable pickup system for you bike. you must mount pickups and pulse rotor on crankshaft, it is position 10° before TOP. We have pulse rotor diameter 50 or 70 mm on stock." When I inquired further about how to mount it to the crankshaft I was told that they weren't familiar with the bike and that the sensors can't be mounted near an alternator. Anyone have an idea how this system might be made to work for the CB77? I have the probe ignition and it works well and was easy to set up. That said, ideally I really would like a system that has a programmable spark advance. nander I don't have one on a CB77, but they are right that you need two pickups for the 180 degree channel to trigger both channels.
For a race bike I was assuming (not always a safe thing to do) that you would dump the alternator and go total loss. If you don't mind the weight of a rotating magnet, you could use PVL, or HPI/Electrexworld. Jerry has indicated that PVL is a very good ignition and I'm guessing that's what he uses - and he knows what works. Sorry I didnt elaborate enough,my road racer ha a battery fired Probe and no charging coil. The engine I am putting together for a cross country/vinduro bike will have the charging/lighting coils along with a Probe and a cap. instead of a battery. I havent tried the second setup out yet but it does work fine with other electronic ign's I have on other bikes. I will be talking to Whitlock before installing though just to make sure there wont be any issues. BFD-I use the standard CB72/77 Probe kit. georGe
