Could it be?....just broke in...?

Post by hondadreamca77 » Thu May 26, 2016 9:44 am

I got my 1968 305 Dream three years ago with 3400 original miles....I just rolled over the grand total of 6700 miles last week.....

Anyway....I am noticing better and better performance. Clutch, acceleration, idle, cruising speed. Granted I went over this bike stem to stern in restoration but could it be it is just now breaking in good? The engine, rings, and case were not opened or worked on in restore. All original. Imagine, a 48 year old bike just now breaking in good on the engine and drive train. Wow...Go Honda!

What was the original factor spec for break in? 5K?

BTW.....all my miles were done on good ole Castrol 30W. Just noting on those who debate using that.

Congratulations, on resisting the temptation to immediately tear down and rebuild an engine when finding a new to you vintage motorcycle. I always advocate for running it a while, just to see if it will smoke or if the rings will loosen up and run great. (except clean the filter and flush it out with a couple of quick oil changes)
By the way that's the same oil I used in the 60's and early 70's. Honda's engines will last almost indefinitely if you keep the oil clean and full. I'm always shocked when I tear down and mic an engine that I know was run hard, but oil changed regularly, that the wear is almost non existent.
Good luck and continue to enjoy your ride!

Well I have the privilege to break in this fine machine in it's 48th year. A little jewel tucked away until I found it and brought it back to life with a resto and meticulous servicing. It found a good home with me as well, the first motorcycle I ever rode on was a Dream and I appreciate the finer yet ingeniously frugal aspects of Japanese engineering.

Cheers!
