buying a ca 77

Post by jefftwin » Mon Jul 06, 2015 9:18 pm

I am looking at a CA 77 with a second gear issue (jumping out on acceleration). Otherwise running well and in rider condition. Seller is asking $2250 obo. Seems high for what is needed. This would be my first Dream but had a Super Hawk years ago. Also very comfortable with mechanical repairs. Any thoughts out there? Thanks.

Several possibilities, shift drum, fork, or gear dogs, worn. Gears could be damaged as well. In any case it means removing the engine and splitting the case. You could easily find more problems once you get inside.

that bike would have to be absolutely perfect IMO to bring that kind of money.

That problem is a full motor tear down and split. Well maybe it could be turned upside down and just the bottom taken off. either way though, LOTS of work and a few hundred dollars in parts for gears, forks, gaskets, seals, assuming you just don't go ahead and freshen everything up while in there.

with that issue and not having seen a pic, its def high. I agree with irutt to a point only because of the gear slipping out issue. ca77's can bring 4-5k if in mint condition and everything working.

Dream price

Plus 1 on Tango and lrutt. If you check eBay completed listing, you will find that what are described as good runners go pretty regularly for as low as $1,500 to $2,000.

I wish it weren't so but, that is reality.

Odds are that known tranny problem will likely being accompanied by a number of others. I would definitely take a pass at that price, even if it is cosmetically in pretty good shape. If the paint or chrome have issues, there will probably be no way to avoid getting upside down in it pretty quick.
