White Wall Tires - Possible New Source

Post by conbs » Sun Apr 28, 2013 12:39 pm

Treatland in San Francisco carries a black wall Sava tire in 3.25x16 for $33. Rating is 54J (62mph, 467 lbs per tire). The Sava site says their tires are "powered by Goodyear technology" or something like that. This is what the tire looks like: https://www.treatland.tv/sava-MC2-moped ... 5-tire.htm

Before anyone goes out and buys a set, consider that he is apparently the Sava rep for the US and is willing to talk to Sava about getting those tires in a Wide White Wall. He would have to make a minimum order of 300 tires but, because they are creating a new tire, there may be room to bump up the speed rating to N or P. That shop does have interest in re-creating unavailable items, but he is hesitant to make a substantial investment, not knowing anything about the Dream part of the market. This size is also used on a Thomas Scooter.

I told him if the price stayed around $50 per tire, he would likely sell 300 tires (150 sets) in a years time just to Dream owners. There might be additional sales for Thomas Scooters.

I told him I would pose the idea on this site and will be sending him a link so he can keep up with this discussion. Several questions you should answer in your response:

1. Has anybody had experience with Sava tires and what was it? The community here needs to know that.

2. Does anyone think the 54J rating will not work? I am no expert when it comes to tires, but it seems to me that putting 600 lbs (400 bike and 200 lbs rider) on tires with a combined rating of 934 lbs would work for me because I don't like to ride my Dream over 60 mph anyway and don't do that very often.

3. Who is interested? Please post a "definitely", "probably" or "maybe" response and number of tires or sets you would buy within a year (or longer). If it depends on the speed rating, let him know that. I will periodically remind him to check the responses.

4. If he is going to the trouble, would the 305 community have greater demand for a metric tire, radial, etc. It would be a good idea to not be too greedy here. I think getting him to make a commitment at all would be a big deal. Getting a better tread than the Firestones in a wide white wall - especially at that price - would be a lot better than what is available today. But, if you are hard over, let him know that. It will certainly influence his discussions with Sava and we may end up with a better tire because of it.

Just having someone seriously engage in the discussion is a pretty big deal, I think. He really is interested in helping if there is a way it will work out for him. He already found a different brand tire that he could get in smaller numbers, that has a 56P rating, but it is a black wall and he doesn't know where his price point will be. Please don't be shy about responding. By posting a response (even if it is a "NO") you will be helping the whole 305 community figure out if there is another answer to the white wall tire question for Dream owners.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Excellent!

I could be tempted with a couple of sets, possibly more. In the UK there will be a ton of Ariel Leader / Arrows which use the same size tire as the Dream and the same size, too.

They also used whitewalls.

I think it would be a great thing! I've already got a pair of the WW Firestones from Coker ready to mount, but the more modern tread of these new tires would be a better fit for a daily city rider. And at that price, I'd try to sell the Firestones at a loss to be able to buy better WW tires.

Definitely. (1) set for my dream. Mine came with horrible shape narrow whites. I searched for a year, gave up and went black. I'd gladly go back! Steve

Put me down for a set.

If he really wanted to produce something currently unavailable, how about the NARROW WW's.

Higher speed rating would be a plus, especially if he is going to advertise them as suitable for a bike with higher design speed.

If he can make them available for around $50 he won't have any trouble selling them. Personally I'm not interested in a sport tire but I'm sure there are many who would be.
