Wheel size questions

Post by KellieLyyne » Tue Mar 29, 2011 11:37 pm

Ok boys and girls, I have gone back about 15 pages or so reading up on the wheel size of a CA77. I am no closer to an answer. HAS ANYONE REPLACED THEIR RIMS???? If so, what size rims did you use? I bought some union cycle rims but they are 1.85 x 16. Then I talked to Bill Silver and he said that I need 2.15 x 16 rims. Does anyone have an answer? Has anyone used these union cycle rims and do they fit? HELP!!!!!

Wheels

I guess, this is an age old question. I am so confused. I bought a 1963 Dream (basketcase) and it has MOST of the parts needed to put it back together but it was far from ridable. So its a year later, and I am getting very close to getting this beast back on the road. Im not going to even start telling you about how much $ Ive sunk into this thing. It is good thing I love these bikes because I will NEVER recoup my money. Okay so here I am with this dilemma. The bike that I purchased had two rims on it. Corroded and in serious need to resurfacing. However when I took the rims to a chrome shop they said they were too far gone to do a good job so it would be better if I found after market ones. So, I went online (ebay) and searched for a few days and I bought some Union Cycle rims. They were advertised to fit Dreams. Since this has been a "hands on" learning experience, I bought the rims. They are 1.85 x 16. I lined them up with my old rims and they are IDENTICAL ( as far as my eyes can tell ) So, I thought I might have an issue with my hubs becauce they do NOT look like others that Ive seen and they use the "ear tabbed dampners" instead of ones with the nipples to hold them in place. So I contacted Bill Silver and he said the hubs are early style and I ok with that but he was concerned about the rims. Because I SHOULD have the 2.15 x 15 rims because the 1.85 wont lace up correctly to my hubs. Now here I sit doing MORE research, and I am so confused because some threads so 1.85 x 16 are the rims to use others say 2.15 x16 and I don't want to send these in to have them laced if they are wrong. Does anyone have any words of wisdom?

Kellie, I think the 1.85s are correct. The complaint that I have seen about the union cycle rims are that the drillings are not at the correct angle. Who are you sending the rims to to have them laced? I have a friend with a shop in Rhonert Park that can correctly re-drill the spoke angles, as well as build up the wheels. PM me if you want his info.

wheel size

Post by mike1969 » Wed Mar 30, 2011 4:21 pm

I'm confused as to the actual wheel measurements. I've seen aftermarket spoked rims listed on Bike Bandit.

They give measurement as an example: Hub 1.85"/ rim 18"
the Dream rims for sale are listed as 1.85" X16" Is this the correct way to measure motorcycle rims?

I always assumed motorcycle rim measurement was by the width of the rim where it meets the tire bead.

Nick at ohio cycle says that 1.85" x 16" rims are correct for the 305 Dream and he has them in stock.
I purchased rims from him several years ago and had no problems lacing them. The width at the bead is about 2.15 on my rim.

Rims

Post by KellieLyyne » Thu Mar 31, 2011 12:50 am

I sent my rims over to a local guy here in Santa Rosa, who deals with wheel relacing and truing, but if he can't do it, then I was going to send them to Buchanans. However, I was HOPING to avoid that because they are quite pricey. I did PM you Davo, because Rohnert Park is just around the corner from me. I could use all the options out there. Thanks for all the information on the rims. I will let you know what ends up happening.

Rims

Speaking of which, what IS the angle of the drillings??

If I was going to get a brand new rim, what should the angle of the spoke nipples be?
