Help on buying a 1969 DreamHelp on buying a 1969 DreamI found a Dream in my travels the other day sitting on a guys front porch. The bike appeared very complete. Here's what I know:
The bike was tagged three years ago and has run since then. Bike is not currently running, gas tank smells like varnish/bad gas Owner was very nice and honest, I have no reason to believe the bike won't run with no more than a carb rebuild and oil change. Exhaust pipes are not original Has a parts bike, I did not see it because I didn't know it was there. He wants $1300 for both bikes, it seems kind of reasonable but I would sure feel better if the main bike was running. The bike has been professionally repainted at some point and this fella has had it since the 80's. I notice the 1969 is not listed for the electronic ignition. Why is that? Is it a different system. I don't want to get stuck with a single year design and not be able to fix it. I did search and could not find the answer. Thanks, I will keep you posted. I plan on going back for a hard look soon and will post pics. SP, 1967 was the last year of production for the 305s. Some were titled later, probably the year they were sold. The E-ignition will work on all year bikes. Pics are worth a thousand words, and we can tell you what's missing or incorrect. it MAY just need a carb cleaning, tank cleaning, new fuel lines, new battery. probalby will need more than that. but working on these bikes is a lot of fun! I would do a full once over if I were you. You may be able to get it running just by checking the basics.. but these are 40+ year old bikes, any neglecting you do now, will bite ya 7 fold in the arse later. I would do the followin 1. buy the bikes. 2. buy bill silvers restoration books and the shop manual can be found for free in pdf format on this site i think. 3. I'd disassemble the project bike per the books instructions and assess each part for damage and wear. 4. compile a list of parts you need to replace 5. take what parts you can from the parts bike that you need 6. sell the rest of the parts bike parts on ebay to help fund this lovely project 7. buy the remaining parts you need using ebay and sites you can find linked to here on this forum 8. rebuild the entire bike :D 9. Ride the bike for another 40+ years '65 CB77

I agree with your format, don't worry I won't rush to much and I will certainly download or buy the books first. I don't want to hurt the bike even though it has run in the last couple years. You know, a friend knew I was looking at the bike and sent a craigslist ad of a nice completely restored one one town over. I decided I was much more interested in getting the one that needs work and going through the process than just having one that was already fixed up. I'll keep everyone posted. Thanks for the replies
