I thought all late Dreams were 305's?

OK, now to my question...since he didn't say if this is a 305 or 250, I'll ask the question on my mind:

If it is a 250, could he swap for a 305 top end, or or there other parts that would be needed?

BTW, since OP didn't say the motor size, I don't think this actually qualifies as a hijack of his thread :-)

(although if it is I will take my punishment.)

I was waiting for an expert's response, but in the meantime I will note that my parts book is specifically for the late '63-'66 Honda 250 Dream.

It's a 305 fellas. I'll keep you up to date on progress. Waiting for some parts right now. Then off to machinist for rebore and a look at valves.

I haven't decided how to proceed with the bike. Mechanical reliability is a given. The tank is off a pre 64, and the forks are also not original as evidenced by red paint under slightly off blue. The left pipe mount doesn't quite mount up right as bracket is off a couple inches. So it's a bitsa bike as someone here coined earlier.

It does have all bodywork, key, and fenders look great.

I wouldn't mind freshening up cosmetics with a respray. I like that blue, but have been pondering a different color. Time will tell.

250 vs 305

Post by conbs » Sun Jun 03, 2012 5:30 pm

Honda Sales figures for 1966 show 692 CA72's (and none after that) with 12,272 "CA77" (they were probably all CA78). Honda production figures are not available by year beginning with 1965, so who knows when they really built what bikes after the change to the 7-digit frame numbers.

Honda claims sales of "CA77" of 5,895 in 1967; 2,632 in 1968; 3,757 in 1969 and finally 375 in 1970.

Honda dream

Post by jbrownmxr » Tue Jun 05, 2012 9:07 pm

I pulled he motor today and discovered a few things.

1. Phillips heads are stupid. I've had to drill 4 of five out during dissasembly. The hex head is a superior fastener.

2. My bike is weird. Tank is pre 1964, forks are not original, engine is 66-67 by virtue of of cylinder head, and wiring loom says 1965.

3. Honda quality was not what it is.

4. I love old motorcycles. Including this one..."

Phillips

Post by conbs » Tue Jun 05, 2012 11:00 pm

1. The "phillips heads" are not phillips heads. They are JIS. They take a different screw driver tip. The screw driver that came in the tool kit was JIS. A #3 Phillips will fit pretty close, especially if you grind just a little bit of the tip off. There are tricks different guys use to get the case screws out without ruining them. Search this site.

2. Bitsa bikes have their own character and can be cool in their own way... like yours.

3. There is a lot to love about these old bikes.
