I've got a 1964 Honda Dream that my father and I are restoring. We're having an issue with the throttle grip sticking. When we twist it, every once in a while it sticks and does not bounce back. We've toyed with it for a few weeks now. I originally thought the metal surfaces under the grip were getting hung up, so we tried to clean that up and remove any areas that weren't completely smooth. This didn't fix the problem. It also seems that if we loosen the screws that hold the top and bottom together that it would function smoothly. That does help but doesn't fix the problem. I've also considered making a gasket to put inbetween the metal surfaces where you tighten the grip to allow for it to move smoothly. Has anyone else run into this problem and found a fix? I'm pretty sure it's related to the crip and sections that come in contact with each other, but I cannot say for sure. Any input would be much appreciated as we'v'e got pretty much everything else working.

1964 Honda Dream 305 Sticky Throttleusually what you are describing is the sum of a few different things. first check for binding at the headlite housing. then REALLY clean and deburr the handgrip slide parts, including the inside of the switch housing and the handlebar itself. look for excessive wear on the slide. disconnect the cable at both ends and lube it. make sure that you have some free play in the cable length adjustment (about 1/8 turn at the grip). use a very light grease on the grip parts (silicone). if this doesn't do it, then pull the slide out of the carb and hit it lightly with some 400 # paper to deburr it as well. (no lube here).
Good luck Randy Missing spring?I would lube your cable really well first. One more thing you should check, especially if you have had the starter button housing apart.
Look at the parts diagram for your bike. You should have a little flat spring in the bottom half of the starter switch housing with an adjustment screw under it. It allows adjustment of the drag on the throttle pipe. Make sure the spring is not missing and/or that the screw is adjusted properly. I knew the spring was in there and still managed to lose mine.
Throttle grip issuesHello. I am new to this group and new to the world of Honda Dream restoration. A few weeks ago I purchased a 1964 Honda CA78 305. It's actually in pretty good shape and the engine runs. But I'm having throttle issues and I've been searching old posts and came up with this one. There's quite a bit of slop in the grip before it seems to grab the cable. I can get it to work a few times but then either the throttle hangs up or the the grip locks up all together and it won't twist either direction. I have had it apart numerous times. With the grip off I can pull the slide part that fits into the grip and it works pretty good. So I don't think it's the cable hanging up or the carb. There was a small flat spring just "floating" around inside when I took it apart the first time. I can't see this part on any drawing I've found and I can't tell where it's supposed to go. I can't really tell if the slide part is all that worn or not. Do they tend to wear? What about the inside of the tube that it mates with? I'm just getting started but I thought I would get this out there and see if I can get this straightened out before I tear everything apart. Thanks in advance for your comments.

It's tough to diagnose a problem without seeing it, but I did bring a '64 CA77 back from the dead last year, so I know the parts that make up the throttle. Do you have the small throttle cable holder in place? (see it here https://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-1959-69- ... sf&vxp=mtr)
