Original tires in 1963Original tires in 1963I just bought a 1963 305 dream with only 400 miles showing on the odometer. Wondering if the tires on it are original. Anybody know what brands Honda used in 1963? The ones on it are Yokohamas. Thanks for any help.
My 1965 Dream has the original tires on it now too. Both of my Front & rear tires are are OHTSU 3.25-16. Front being RIBBED, and rear having "squares" as the tread. NOT thick heavy squares like a "knobby" but more subdued.

Now working/riding on my 1965 CA77 Dream... A while back I spent some time looking into this. As I recall Ohtsu and Nitto were the original brands. It seems to me that the Nitto's were narrow white wall and the Ohtsu were wide but, Jim's CA77 seems to contradict that if his tires are original though, that wouldn't answer the question about what was original in 1963.
I used to have a chart that showed the different tread patterns and manufacturers but, I couldn't find it for this post. As for 1963, I am not sure how you would be able to confirm what was original. The pictures in my 1964 parts book (with the old part numbers) seem to indicate a narrow white wall in front and a wide one in the back. I am not aware that bikes actually came that way but, it may indicate there was a narrow and a wide option. To muddy that water a little more, that parts book only shows the original part and then a superseding part number. Somewhere in the back of my mind, it seems it might have been that the CA77's came with wide whitewalls and part of the change to CA78 in 1963 included going to the narrow whitewalls. I used to own a '65 that had 3200 original miles when I got it. It had original everything (except the battery), even down to the vent tubes for the air cleaners. It had the Nitto narrow whitewalls. mschehen, is your bike a CA77 or a CA78.
I've had my hands on many Dreams over the years, including many low mile, original paint bikes. What I have seen are Ohtsu wide whitewall on the early Dreams before the change happened sometime n 1963 to the later Dream, where I have seen the Nitto narrow whitewall from there on. That's only what I have seen. It is possible if a certain tire manufacture couldn't supply enough inventory that Honda may have supplemented a shortfall in tires with a different manufacture, but that is only speculation on my part.
OP, how about providing a complete frame number and some photos of your bike? If it truly is a 400 mile, unmolested original paint bike some folks might like to use your bike for reference. HT Original White WallsPlus 1 on Hoosier Tom's post.
