need advice on purchase

Post by Mansoldworld » Thu Mar 27, 2014 9:44 am

Hello all.
Newb questions on purchasing a 305
Have only seen a few and they were always nice restored,
Local CL listing for a a dream, seller asking $6000.

VIN 1017716

Engine# CA77E-1017249

Is this too much?

I've seen the bike in person, seller has kept it clean. Seems like there's a oil leak in front cylinders from gasket (head) right below exhaust pipes, other than that no other apperant leaks.

The milage about 4k, seller states even original tires (not convinced), and he is not original owner.

All the metal bits are corossion free though some look polished compared to the chrome handle bars (maybe new).but paint it in great condition, little patina, but some areas where some wear and rust have come through on a few covers.

Starts up, runs well from what I can tell, i be ridden it but not far enough to get to 3rd. Shifts solidly, brakes are not what I'm used to (all my Hondas are 88 and newer).

So other than you're opinions to price, what should I be concerned about mechanically with this bike. Leaky gasket make me consider impending replacement and ar the heads difficult to remove reinstall, etc.
What are some other mechanical issues that you owners would know about?
Many thanks for your info.

Yes, I think that is too much to pay, but I really don't know enough about it. Pictures would be nice. The mileage is a little suspect, especially since he's not the original owner, he's just being told that from the prior owner. The oil leak can be fixed with out too much trouble.

I don't know what your intentions are, but I think you can find one cheaper. Just because its old doesn't equate to $$$. And they're certainly not rare!

Add your location to your profile and perhaps you will get more response to your questions.

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

CA price?

Without pictures it is difficult to give you a firm opinion.

If it is ALL original, including tires, is complete and paint and chrome are all good, it may be worth $6,000. 4,000 miles is very low for a 50 year old bike. Any way to confirm those are the original? Are the yellow paint dabs still on the rims/brake arms?

I agree with Tinman. The value to you may not be that high. If you are looking to add to a collection or show the bike, then the asking price may not be out of line. Most guys just want a Dream because they are very unique to ride and look at. You can get a rider for a lot less.

You are on the right track with investigating as much as you can. Keep it up. You should do a search of this site regarding the oil leak. If it is a skull, then you will need a new head. If it is an o-ring between the cylinder and head those can be a pain, but persistence will pay off.

Best wishes on your endeavor.

I'm not an expert by any stretch but last year I bought a 1966 Dream 305 for $2500.00. It is pretty clean, runs well, came with a title and I have no real complaints. For 6K I'd want a bike that you could eat off of. Perfect in every way condition. I wanted to ride my Dream so I did not want a museum piece. Good luck and make sure you post some pictures if you get your bike.
