How to Wheelie a Dream

Post by elephant » Thu Nov 21, 2013 5:12 pm

I made the following mods to my 65 Dream to make it more sporting and ride-able. I can wheelie it a couple of car lengths. A younger, dumber fellow could balance the thing and probably get a block or so.

1. CA72 Head (more compression)

2. CB77 Carb (noticeable power increase, must mod throttle cable, low speed jet, throttle slide, slide needle, needle jet, and main jet)

3. CB77 Cam (move torque up the rpm scale, not what I needed)

4. 79/82 750 pistons (62mm, a light, more modern high compression piston, crown must be relieved)

These performance mods are fluff as far as wheelies are concerned, the clutch is the main factor.

1. To get away from a dragging clutch with stiff springs and spacers, I changed the primary ratio from 3.2 to 2.7. This decreases the torque through the clutch. (You have to change the counter shaft sprocket to get back to stock gearing.)

2. Wave cut the steel clutch disk (imagine a pentagon wit arcs instead of points, make sure they are de-burred, this works great on the stock clutch also)

Disclaimer: These mods are not for everybody, these are for someone who wants to do burnouts and wheelies on bike night and generally act like a fool.

Interesting topic. I'd never have considered a Dream to be capable of popping wheelies.

BITD the one thing that got me interested in my first CB77 was that it's PO revered it for ripping off the line and throwing the front wheel up. Not something I ever managed to achieve, but I could get it to lay a little rubber onto the right sort of (shiny) tarmac.

Man, I have some 18 bikes and the one I least would want to wheelie would be the dream. But I guess it's the same as climbing a mountain, because it's there. I'll stick with my Duc and XR for serious wheelie work.

As far as the carb, cam, head and piston swap what do you think it increased the hp to? Im not looking for doing anything bold just want to make sure I have enough oomff to get out of the way of all these Texas trucks if so required.

I think with those engine mods it may be more suited for the Wall of Death.......

I think I have a 3-5 HP increase. It will cruise with a tooth larger on the counter shaft. The best mods are the 62mm piston and a cb77 carburetor. Good luck with those Texas trucks.
