CL77 Engine install

Post by quidger » Sun Feb 14, 2021 1:10 pm

I’m struggling with reinstalling the motor in my 1966 CL77 frame.
Does it make a difference if I slide it in from the left side versus the right side?
Any tips or suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks

The CL77/72 engine is removed / installed from the Right-hand side of the frame. The right-hand bottom engine hanger plate is removed (two 8x16mm bolts) to facilitate engine removal and installation.

- With the front of the engine raised slightly, "swing" the engine into the frame. When engine is in the frame, support the engine by inserting a round steel rod or T-screwdriver into the mounting holes for the upper engine hanger.
- Then, the rear engine mounting bolts and engine under bolt can be installed. Finally, remove the rod or T-screwdriver and install the upper engine hanger bolt.

An extra pair of hands is always helpful!

Many will recommend removal of the left-hand engine exhaust studs before engine removal and installation to allow better frame-to-engine clearance while swinging the engine. Taping up the frame downtube with protective padding won't hurt, either.

Hey deuce7,

Thanks for the advice and clear explanation.
I’ll give it another go.

I just did it last week. It's no fun alone. But I did find that a jack under the rear of the engine after you get the front of the sump past the frame and into place, allows you to jack up the rear and the mounts will line up.

I never tried to hang it from the top mount as suggested. That might have made things easier. Too late now, it's in.
