Scrambler Gas Cap Leakage

Post by rbunyan4 » Tue Oct 12, 2010 9:33 pm

My 1966 CL 77 was purchased in April 2010 and came fairly restored. I noticed that the silver gas tank had yellow gas stains, supposedly a product of ethanol in the gasoline. Thinking that the rubber seal on the gas cap wasn't doing its job, especially when the tank is full, I bought a replacement. No improvement. Does anyone know if this is a common trait of the Scrambler gas caps and, if so, is there any solution other than running the tank at half capacity? Also, does anyone have suggestions for removing the yellow stains from the tank without destroying the clearcoat and paint? Thanks for any help!

Welcome to the forum. This issue has been discussed in depth. Do a search for gas cap, and do some reading. As for the staining, it depend on what the PO painted the tank with. Try some mild polishing compound first, and see if that works.
