I am new to this forum and am hoping that you can help me with a project I have going. I saved what I think is a 63 CL72 from going to the junk yard and was originally gonna restore it. Turns out I cant afford that option so I have a go cart that I would like the put the motor and tranny in. The bike was in really rough shape when I got it and I dont know when the last time the motor ran was. The code on the motor is CL72E-1004013. What do I need to do in order to get it running? What should I check. I am mechanically knowledgeable but not with bikes. Ususally I do cars so I may need a little coaching.

New member!I hope the reason no ones responded is not because I am taking this bike apart and not restoring it. I understand that can be very frustrating especially because there arnt very many of these left. I understand more than you think, I have an 87 Buick Regal Grand National and not many know what those are, this is because there were not many made and I see them getting parted out all the time and it hurts. However 85% of the Buicks being parted out are due to them being wrecked or so far gone that it would cost 3 times what the cars worth to fix it and many people dont wanna commit to that which I can understand. This is the case with my bike... It was so far gone when I got it that it would cost me thousands to fix it which I dont have. So instead I decided to save it from the junkyard and use all the parts I could and than sell the rest so that people can still get some OEM parts for a resto that they can afford to do. So I hope that someone will help me with my project I mean wouldnt you rather see the powertrain go to a good cause instead of rot?
I hope that I havent offended anyone that was not my intention at all. So I need to know how to tear this motor down and get it to go, it seems it is frozen because even in neutral it wont rotate. Where do I start? Thanks -Andrew
Andrew, The first thing I would do is get a shop manual to help guide you thru a tear down. Since the bike has been sitting awhile and the motor is stuck it would be safe to assume the piston rings are rusted to the sleeves. You will need to free them up so you can get the jugs off so you can see whats left. I'd plan on a over bore and new pistons and rings. Thats a good start for you, after that you will want to replace the clutch disc's,clean the oil filter,chech the points and breaker plate(and advance system), Go thru the carbs(rebuild), and etc-etc. But one thing at a time and don't get overwhelmed! Here's a thought.......Why don't you sell the bike complete or at the very least part it out. You would be pleasantly surprised at the money some of those parts or a complete bike will bring on e-bay. Turn that money around and get a CB350 (Cheaper)engine. Parts will be more available and cheaper and it will have have a starter to boot. I can't imagine you would want to kick start your Kart. This way restorers will be happy and you will make out like a bandit. Like I said just a thought...... Ron Cribbs

I will just avoid the hassel of machine work part it out and buy a running motor for my cart. Also could someone ID this tank that was on the bike? It dosent look like a CL72 tank from what I have seen but the bike has all CL72 codes???
