67 CL77 maiden voyageThe air leak was something LM mentioned as well, forgot to check. With the battery dead, testing was over for the day, charging it up now.
The funny thing was early this morning when I first started it and saw the blue smoke (short lived, burnt off I hope) it felt powerful, but only for a couple of minutes. My compression tester is lacking an attachment for this size plug. I also want to figure out the electrical problem, that is definitely a progress stopper. Thanks -Forrest I think I have the electrical situation straightened out now with some help from Mike from Idaho.
http://www.honda305.com/forums/post78079.html#78079 So this afternoon I started it up and I could tell it was running on 2 cylinders. Put on the helmet and gloves and drove to a friends 10 miles away on slow back roads. The bike was cutting in and out of running on 2 cylinders, but mostly on 2 after a bit. It has some balls when it kicks in. Showed my friend, looked at the plugs and they both looked good, brownish, we ate, the bike cooled down and it started up again on 1st kick, I rode down to the beach with him following and it was mostly running on one, I found if I put my hand over the left carb as a choke (no filters) it would kick in, I had to do this for about 2 miles before it was running on 2 cylinders, from there I got all the way home on 2 cylinders w/o have to use my hand as a choke. So it must be the left carb???? Why did choking it suddenly make it ok after a time? I love the way the bike rides, and sounds....! -Forrest Gave it a start today, started on the right cylinder and hand over left made the left kick in, blue smoke when it kicked in. Shut it off pondering what to do next. I noticed a little pool of gas on the left carb bottom where that brass tube (name?) sticks out.
I'm going to let the engine go cold and check the valves again. I just can't figure how I fooled the bike into running on 2 cylinders yesterday on my ride. I got my 12mm adapter today for my compression tester, I was about timid about trying it after Loud Mouse told me once got a reading of 5. lol
Started it up, 1st kick after a week of sitting. Let it get warm, but the left cylinder was cold, not functioning. Shut it off, Right cylinder 122, or there about, Left cylinder about 117. Put in some oil, left went up to 125 and Right stayed about the same. Now I know with the left cylinder not being warmed up this is not a great test. But I was happy with the results, at least it wasn't a 5. Checked for spark after.....left not sparking...... Now I was able to get the spark plug wire removed from the left side coil, I snipped 1/4 off each end, stuck a voltmeter on each end, and twisted the wire around and seemed to be ok. remounted. Could it be the coil? I'm going to get some new wire in the meantime. Ideas? Thanks for reading. -Forrest I think I got it. Decided to buy new plug wires and caps, bought copper core (not solid, by mistake) and 5k NGK Plug Caps. I also bought a used points plate off eBay, as mine was beat and the screws suspicious (too long).
But something else came up. I bought 5 of these gas filters Had 2 in the CL77 and threw one in my Honda 550k. Took the 550 for a ride and it started acting funny, bogging down, then quit. Started up a few minutes later and I got it home. Replaced the filter with the good old fashion one. Well it ran like a champ, so I ditched the ones on CL77 as well and installed the old style. Took it for a 30 mile ride today and it ran pretty good, 2 cylinders at all times, could be a bit smoother, but I'm happy. Thanks to all who helped, especially Loud Mouse who wasn't keen on paper gas filters. Next fix horn, snapped the only screw that was holding it. Isn't working either.
