Gas Cap Leakage
Gas Cap LeakageMy '66 CL 77 (1018521) leaks around the gas cap when the tank gas level is about 2 inches from full. The cap has the rubber gasket with a spring mechanism to create a tight seal with the tank, similar to a pressure radiator cap. In theory, this should prevent any fuel leakage. The cap was new and from Classic Honda Restoration, and the fill hole on the tank has not been damaged or modified from original. Ethanol staining from this leaking leaves a yellowish scar and is virtually impossible to remove. I'm reluctant to add a second rubber gasket around the fill hole as I understand this may foul up the gas tank air venting. Can anyone shed light on how I might stop the leakage without compromising something else? Thanks!
leaking gas capBunyan,
Two gaskets are a bad idea. My CL has an older cork gasket and it doesn't leak. Would it leak if overfilled I wonder? You know how we sometimes pull the gas hose foreskin back to "get a little more fuel in"?. Just a thought.
Gas Cap LeakageYou are not experiencing leakage when your tank is not totally filled, but full enough to get sloshing around the filler opening? Thanks.
leaking gas capWhen I "filler up", the fuel level is about 2" down from the top of the tank hump visible at the filler opening and normal street riding doesn't produce leaks.
Gas Cap LeakageHmm...I may have a cap-to-tank gap then that allows slight amounts of fuel to escape. Thanks for your responses. I'll quiz the folks at the Vintage Bike Meet in Huntington Beach, CA at the November meet. One of the few places that I've even seen another 305 Scrambler in So Cal.
The Vintage Motorcycle Meet is the second Sunday of every month, which would be November 10th, 2 p.m. to 4 pm. About 80 to 150 bikes is the range and they include a good array of older vintage bikes to today's rockets. You can enter your bike for best of show or just park and display. If you want to show get there on time, as the show area fills up. The address is the Beach Burgers parking lot at 19102 Beach Blvd, Huntington Beach, just south of Garfield. Go to www.vintagebikeoc.com for more info, map, photos of previous meets. Like I said, I think I've only seen two other Scramblers in like 4 years and maybe 2 or 3 Super Hawks/Dreams. Not sure why!
