66-cl77 cam timing chain dont fit.

Post by CL77NOW » Thu Jul 28, 2011 6:05 pm

im putting cam chain on : new. and is 1 link short. perplexing.
rk 219 NIB.
94 tooth old chain, new same. same length exactly.
i counted both and measured pitch etc,. same.
new center roller is .1 larger new. (rib in center, a tad taller.)
so put back old center idler.
the top cam center sprocket was bad (rivets loose) .
i had a spare sprocket, both are 32 tooth and same , center spine.
the side tension'er is not installed.

any one have an idea what i did wrong.?
lots of careful work done ,using silvers books.
thanks for any tips.

cheers.

New chains are generally really tight. I use the 4 center studs with spacers and washers, tighten them down, and then join the chain with the master link. It can still be a tight fit, an extra set of hands helps.

wow , here it is, what a PITA..
impossible with out my wife.

the steps (13 tries) tools flying !
step
1: OIL pump is out, so when you drop chain 23 times, the cussing , is not too bad.
2: with vise-grip set TDC right. the magneto will fight you.
3: lock it down with grips over chain on rear of sprocket and TDC on cam is flat , bulls eye up.
4: crank at TDC(right) and put chain under crank then pull it up with bailing wire.
5: now the chain is on both sides of cam sprocket. no slack on rear side of chain.
6: using needle nose, i pull up on front side chain until it is on the sprocket at max..
7: i lock the chain to the sprocket here (forward) with visegrips#2 and put a bailing wire to mid point on front chain. (after 23 drops, i found a way , zero drops )
im now fixed solid (all things frozen), so i cant lose perfect time. i check it 3 times. it's good.

i then take needle nose and insert them on the right side end of chain.
and squeeze the chain (it fights you) and the two ends come closer.. max pain....
wife takes keeper and jams it in, takes 6 tries for 2. with pliers. BINGO.
it's in.
check timing 3 more times.. I hate this thing. i've done just about every dirt bike cam you can think of. but this beast, wow.

hope that helps someone.
