Re: Tank seam

Post by LOUD MOUSE » Mon Dec 20, 2010 4:20 pm

As HONDA didn't do much of a job with the numbers (at times) for all the changes from apx. 1966 to 1967 tis tough to know for sure just which bike was the first with a change.
Looking at the fiche for the tank ya won't get much info when the tank with the seam was issued.
There are some parts I'd put my feet in cement as to issue and that said there a lot more that I'll keep my feet dry.
Thank you very much. ........:-). ......lm

I can personally trace it's history back to 1973 and I don't believe it was abused enough prior to my ownership to require a tank replacement. But I've been wrong before. I guess unless you actually bought it new you wouldn't know for sure. Ed?.........D

My 1966 CL77 I have owned since 1971 and to the best of my knowledge is original. It has a seamed tank.

I won two more CL77's, the result of a recent garage purchase. They are both rough and one has a seamed and one has a seamless.

Looks like seamed for 1966 will be faithful.

My 10401060 is a non-seamed tank which I believe is late 1966 (uses the old JIS threads before the changeover) although it's titled as a '68.

Let me start by saying that the 1966 Scrambler was never sold stock with a seamed tank. Seamed tanks started showing up in 1967 and 1968. They were on the Scramblers that most of us navy guys bought in japan and brought home on the ship. Then when I got back home they were called an after market tank. I have owned 14 scramblers and have never had a 1966 with a seamed tank. I bought my first scrambler in 1966 and here it is 2011 and I am now restoring them. Any other questions about scramblers feel free to email me at wildbillship@msn.com.

1966 tank

Post by 1972vsonic » Thu Jan 27, 2011 2:10 pm

I have a 66 frame # 1033418 that I bought from the original owner about 15 years ago. The previous owner said that he had not replaced anything on it and it has a seamless tank. I know only the basics about the bike and can not comment on any other than mine. I believe the bike was repainted a strange brown color when it was about 2 years old , however nothing was reportedly done to remove the seam at this time. I have seen two others in this color, but I don't think the bike was ever offered in it. There are a few chips on the inside of the rear fender and blue paint is visible under the brown. The guy had the fork ears, side covers, headlight shell, and fork legs chrome plated for some reason. I have another set of these parts that are not chrome plated. Any comments?
