Podtronics rectifier/regulator for CB77

Post by markstertt » Tue Mar 05, 2013 7:12 pm

Has anyone used the Podtronics r/r for their Honda CB77? I'd like to do a rect/reg upgrade as mentioned on the forum. Both the Charlies and Oregons r/r are rather pricey compared to a Podtronics or Tympanium unit (about $50.00) and the Pod is popular with vintage Triumph owners using the same design permanent magnet single phase alternator as the Honda. Has anyone tried one of these? I searched but got side tracked with Hoosier Tom's restoration of his '62 CB77 so didn't find an answer..thanks, Mark

I'll call Pod since he hasn't answered my email. Podtronics are assembled in Taiwan and the Tympanium unit I understand are made in the USA, not that there is anything wrong with either. I noticed on Oregons site he says his vrrpm unit for the CB77 is also compatible with early Triumph, Norton, BSA single phase systems so conversely the Triumph r/r should be fine on the Honda. I need a solid state r/r for my Triumph so it won't hurt to pick one up on ebay for $49.95 free ship. Will report back with results...Mark

I think it should work without issue. I would combine the pink and yellow coming out of the stator and connect to one yellow wire on the reg/rec and the brown wire to the other yellow wire. Since it will now be regulated there is no need to do the manual regulation via the switch that the pink wire is connected to. At least that the way I would try it.

Hahnda, that's the plan on connecting the output leads as you suggested. I also plan to put one of those small 'matchbox' relays in the headlight shell for the lighting circuit, if you haven't seen those google it and see if it doesn't sound good to you. Don't know if I heard about them on this forum or another.

Hillhudson, yep, just ordered a Podtronics on ebay from racingnorton @ 49.99 + free ship.
