Top speed....Top speed....Hey guys, was wondering what top speeds are you guys achieving with these 305s. Just went to check out a superhawk and was told by the seller that although on paper it can achieve 90mph...it can only cruise at about 65 mph without breathing hard and starts to strain anything above that. I told the buyer i wanted to ride the bike home via the FWY and was discouraged not too. Is this BS or he maybe hiding something that can be wrong with the bike he is selling?

Riding the freeway is a matter of choice I suppose. ..................lm
I've had mine up to an indicated 105mph (what that is in actuality, who knows!), with still some left. Only problem is that it takes a little while to get up to the (indicated) 100+ mph point, but mine can hit 90 easily.
As far as cruising goes, highway speeds are fine -- I normally ride it at 65-75mph with no problems, and comfort-wise it's fine for me....depends on your own physical dimensions too! running at 70mph for extended times can cause the engine to lock up momentarily due to cheap oil and pistons siezing. Run a good modern motorcycle "wet clutch" rated oil, and 60 mph all day is better for the bike. everyone will have a different opinion. Also remember that wear rates are dependant on rpms. ymmv. Modern oils have reduced wear, heat, friction, reduced piston scuffing, ring coking, cam and cam follower wear, cold start wear, and even mpg over the old oils. Engine life has been doubled with modern oils with higher lift cams, hotter engines, and higher pressures. High temp additives such a zinc and phosphates will actually be attracted to hot areas and cling to them, coat them and reduce friction. These additives do nothing till a part gets hots and then reacts so that they work only where needed. some owners insist on running the 1959 non detergent oi and are purist, but in 1959, no other oil existed and cars had valve jobs at 30,000 miles and overhauls at 50,000 miles with the low performing oils.
but so much for the oil commercial, short bursts of speed are great, all day cruising over 60 mph is a bit hard on this size of bike. two cl77, three cb77, ca77, ca72, cb160, s65 and cb750
Help Stop Global Whinning Its considered bad luck to be superstitious. Let's not forget that a stock CB77 does not make a huge amount of power. The only HP numbers I have seen suggested that it made 23.5 at 8,500 at teh rear wheel.
A good one probably makes more and in that same test, with a 350 kit and H&C (non roller rockers) it made 31 at 9,000. Still not a lot, but much better.
