Still in one piece

Post by Goodysnap » Wed Oct 29, 2008 8:18 pm

For the last few years I've been waiting to see what these bikes were going to be. They were my wives grandfathers bikes and he bought them new so I'm told. I had no idea what they even were until I got them home and started searching serial numbers. I thought I would take this time to introduce myself and show you guys my new superhawk. I feel fortunate to find one in this shape and I cannot wait to ride it. I'm very wet behind the ears in reguards to not only motorcycles in general but a bike of this age. I am a Mechanic and shop owner by trade so I'm excited finding something new to tinker with , even though it happens to be a decade older than me.I guess the thing I'm most curious about is the "crash bars" . Does anyone know weather these are Honda add-ons or aftermarket ? I look forward to talking w/ all of you. CB77-400430/ B160-1036241

Hi,

I am also new here. It looks like your bike is in good condition!

My son and I are working on a Superhawk. (Pictures here: http://www.honda305.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3393 ) He is going on 16, and is interested in anything that has a motor on it. I am an engineer, not a mechanic, but I like working on things like this so it is a fun project. We just fired it up for the first time last night. It only fired on one cylinder. I felt the pipes, and one was cold the other was warm. I checked the spark and it was good but it looks like it isn't getting gas. I tried it again and ran it a bit longer. The exhaust was cool on one side. I made the mistake of touching the pipe again and got a nasty burn on my hand. I guess a guy is never to old to learn something new :)

Good luck on your new project!

Dave

Welcome along, Goodysnap; a degree of eccentricity is a prerequisite here -- hope you can comply.

According to records, the CB77 is a late '64; is the engine nr. a close match?

Crash bar I can't comment on, but I've seen them for sale on eBay. It obviously had a purpose; the bike looks like it was used for some light-hearted offroading or hillclimbing -- semi-knobblies, cut-back fenders, mini mufflers & CL handlebar.

I'd like LM's comments on the Candy Orange paint; I read that Honda made some CBs in Candy colours, but I thought that was much later in production -- perhaps '67......

I'm no pro, but those look like period correct crash bars from the Honda catalog.

burned hand

Post by jleewebb » Wed Nov 19, 2008 10:01 am

re your burned hand...I did the same thing in 1963 when I first got my bike...riding along, it started running on one cylinder. I checked and right exhaust was cool, then without thinking grabbed the left exhaust. Pipe had a black burned skin spot from then on. I called friend I bought the bike from, said "hey bike will only run on one cylinder." He said, "have you checked the gas lately?" That's how I found out that these bikes will run awhile on one side only when they're about to run out of gas. A painful lesson.
