The brake linkage looks like CB/CL160. If the wheel fits centrally between the forks, the brake anchor connects up and the speedo drive rotates in the correct direction you should be OK as-is.

It's not the correct part but will do the job....

Much gratitude to all the experts who helped here. It looks like this setup will work, The brake stay is too short though and I will need to fabricate a new one. A 6mm spacer will center the wheel in the forks.

On the non threaded side of the axle how far should it slide into the leg lower? It almost looks like it should slide in flush with the fork lower. Mine is mushroomed out on the end thus when installed/tightened still stubs about 3/16" out the end of the fork lower.

I'll post a pic later. My current setup will work and be safe as I am thinking the pinch bolt on the fork will secure everything but I am curious what it is supposed to look like.

Edit - A little photo research reveals that it should protrude about 1" which I thought was about right as this would allow one to hold the axle using the hole in the end for removal/install. Mine sits further in due to the brake plate setup. I may have to rethink my wheel spacer setup.

As you say, it sticks out far enough to put a tommy bar through the hole.

Glad the forum was able to get it sorted out. Yours was a case where photos make all the difference.

OK I have another issue. I have been struggling to figure out what is wrong with my front end - wheel spacers, looks odd, etc. This bike is no stocker, I am rebuilding it as a period chopper. I bought it as a parts bike with a cl77.

Turns out my top triple clamp is about 2mm narrower than the lower. I have machined my top to accept aftermarket forks and would prefer to replace the lower to match the upper if possible. Can anyone possibly identify what these parts are and suggest what I may need to remedy?

Here is my top triple.

Here is the lower.

You can see the brace/fender mount, I used that to finally figure out what was wrong. It's not hard to see when moving that up and down the fork legs.

Here is a shot of the bike as it sits - I have been at it all winter. I am running a CL motor with the top cover and oil pump switched out to CB stuff.

Thanks!

You might have a CB160 top clamp.

There were a number of different CB72/77 front fork variations so you may just have mismatched forks and clamps. You are building a special so you're in the best place to work out what fits what......

That's what I'm afraid of! Lol.

I plan to take it apart and measure tonight but short of having a bunch of different clamps here I don't know how I am going to figure it out. My fork legs are aftermarket obviously, 33mm diameter. I have shimmed the lower already which is half a bodge in my opinion. The upper I had machined to fit the top of the fork.

It would be nice to have 33mm lowers that fit the legs properly. I am worried about stem length and top nut size mostly - getting the diameter right is the easy part.

Google, here I come!

Thanks G Man.
