CB77 front axle spacer?

For those that are curious I think I have figured it out.

The lower triple is bent. There is a threaded hole on the right side of the lower - when viewed from below the hole is elongated. Seems the steering stop hit the frame hard enough to distort it. Aside from that there is very little evidence of damage.

I have a new one ordered from Ebay, here's hoping it all bolts up on monday.

I am happy to report the new triple solved my issue. My old lower was very bent which I had trouble figuring out. Nice and straight now though it still flexes an alarming amount due to the extended legs. This is going to be an exciting ride!

Also the axle sets up as it should now and I don't need any spacer. The legs splayed out with the bent triple and thus axle fitment was troubling.

The new lower triple trees I got are blue and have a couple differences. There is no pin on the bottom to locate the steering stabilizer. I am not sure what I am going to do about that yet. I would like to run it.

The biggest issue is the diameter at 38mm, those who have been following along will remember my legs are 33mm. My last triple was 35mm.

So I made some spacers, 2.5mm or as near as I could get.



This is an early state for them - much grinding and sanding followed to get a nice fit.

Here is a shot of the triple installed, it does not look a lot different that my last one. You can see the tops of the shims I made. I am very happy with the result - nice and snug.



Tonight I hope to check the valve lash and then install the motor.

Can you send a picture of the underside of that lower triple clamp, please? That one is for the early bikes, pre '63 if it has 38mm bores.

I would like to see the steering damper mounting, if possible.

Bummer, just crafted a great reply and deleted it somehow. Here is the cliff note version.

Bent triple. 25mm OD for the main bit.



Here is the replacement, the nut in the center is 29mm across.



It is tough to see and dirty but the nut has an odd step to it which likely accepts some part of the stabilizer.



I tried to capture it there but without much success. I can provide more detail on the lower nut if needed. Maybe clean it!

Funny how a thread started about wheel spacers morphed into old steering stabilizer setups. I love the forums!
