1st ride this the year !

Post by bonjour » Sun Mar 30, 2014 8:34 am

Yep, today was the day. 1st ride with the CB77 this year.
Charged the battery, checked the tires, checked the oil level, gas lever on 'on' , watched the fuel run toward the carb's, switched the ignition key, choke on, pressed the button.... 5 sec... hmm... wait 10sec, pressed the starter button again... 2 sec, and ignition ! 1st the right cilinder, 5sec later the left... and watch how all the old gas smoked like hell !! :D

Revved it gently up and down to 3000rpm for 30 sec, then let it idle, put my gear on, and away I was :D

What a fantastic day.

When I got home, I parked the bike, and from the kitchen I got a nice 'perspective' view on the bike and my 'car' :P

Is the little Jap so small, or is that Dutchman so large ?

I know, BOTH ! :D

Hi Swantz !

What a nice CB72, does it run well ?

Im glad I (might?) inspired you to buy a CB72/77 :D :P

It's a real joy to ride he ?

Easy when you want, or just rev it for some awesomeness :D

I love it when you accelerate quick and pass 4500rpm, that sound...... :D :D :D :D

it doesnt run very well.. still needs some adjustments etc. it wont run past the 6000 rpm, and wont go faster than 80 km/u.
Got a new condenser on it, and it runs a little better now. Might need some new breaker points.
i also got a too weak battery in it, was the only one i had around. so that might explain why it wont run past 6000 rpm. so need to try it with the right battery (12v 9A Right)

What kind of spark plug do you have in it? it had NGK C7HSA in it when i got it.

But it sounds great! and i like how the front fork bounces up and down when driving, hahaha!

I think I also got ngk 7 in it.

But, is the timing of the ignition oke ?

If should reach 6k rpm with no problem at all.

If i where you, the first think I would do is check all the timings, ignition and valves (just to make sure)
For the ignition timing, A timing-light/stroboscoop is the way to go.

Maybe also you should consider a compression test, but first be sure that all else is oke. If then still problems occur, then a compression test.

If it only reaches 80km/u~6k rpm there is a big problem/something very wrong/offset, so that means that finding the problem can't be difficult.

ignition timing should be good. light turns on exactly on F and LF. also adjusted the Valves with the right feeler gace, so they should be good too.
carb slides are adjusted so they open at the same time.

Only thing i could think of is that the battery that is in it now is too weak to perform a good spark above 6000 rpm? now its a 12v 4A. i hope a 12v 9A should do the trick.
it drives just fine under the 6000 rpm, accelerates fast, but when i give more than half gas i starts dying. so should be something with the carbs i think.

Whoa! Found the problem today! There were 2 different size main jets in the carbs. Switched them for 2 of the same size and it runs a lot better now! It runs over the 6000 rpm just fine, and I touched a 100 km/h today!
Carbs needs some better adjustments, but is should be going better from now on! :D
