Combination Switch question, doesn't fit ?!?!

Post by bonjour » Tue Aug 31, 2010 1:20 pm

So, I got me a new combination switch a few month's ago.

Today was the day that I was going to install it, but it turn's out that it doesn't fit.
I never got to see how the old one was installed, because it was parted.

But the 'hole' in the cover is to big, and the switch is to small. You understand the problem there..

It looks like I need 2 big 'spacer' rings around the switch, but I don't know if that's correct.

When I looked in the box with the extra parts I got with it, I found a bracket or something that looks like it needs to be installed around the switch, but I really don't know how or what... And it still looks like I need some sort of rings anyway.

I hope someone can help me out here, what kind of parts I need (to make) to install it, or am I doing something completly wrong here ?!?! Im a little bit confused because I really didn't expect this.

Here are the pics.

Image As you see, to small comb. switch + to big hole = doesn't not mount.

Image And the bracket I found, wich make my confusion grow ?!?!?!, lol.

Here is how mine is mounted. It mounts to the frame and is accessed through the hole in the side cover.

Ah, now that makes some sense !

I already thougt that I could never get the side cover of, without messing around with the wires, wich didn't make much sense also.

Thank you very much ! Im sure it will work now.

There's a special, chromed nut that retains the ignition switch (the term 'combination switch' refers to the 5-position ignition/lighting keyswitch found on C/CA Dream [touring] models) and fills the aperture in the side cover. I'll post a pic tomorrow unless someone beats me to it.

Thanks for all the help guys, really awesome.

But yesterday I made a terrible discovery, it turn's out that the prev. owner cut of the 'switch holder' as you can nicely see in the pic. of Gunner.

Here, if you look closely, you can't see the nice switch-holder :

Image

The guy just cutted the holder off, So I have to improvise and make something myself for the switch.
I don't want to weld on the frame, so im going to make a holder that is '(de-)mountable'

Ah well.... that's the charm of having an old bike again !

I think the prev. owner raced this thing, or, the owner before him did. I don't know.
I also a holder for the chain-guard, also cutted off. Probably to lose weight, LOL !

Ah well, Ill make something unique for it !

Thanks for all the help guy's, this was really frustrating me ! Now i know why it did, haha !

Observation: are you sure that your 'new' ignition switch is for the CB derivative? Could it be for a CL? It just doesn't look right at all.
