trying to get my Cb77 started

Post by qside » Sun Mar 10, 2013 6:14 pm

I picked up a rust bucket of a bike this winter to work on. The engine was seized as well as other issues. I pulled the engine and rebuilt it completely using Bill Silver's book. i replaced the seals, gaskets, clutch pads, rings and cam chain. I sequentially removed, repaired and rebuilt each section of the bike in my basement. I have spent the last few weeks reassembling the sections into a complete bike. Now the issue... it wont start.

1. I Get a nice healthy spark at both plugs. gapped correctly
2. I set the timing as per Ed Moore's method: ( i noticed that the right point iss set to .014, the points open exactly on F and LF marks, but the left point gap is only about 1/2 that of the right. Is this normal?)
3. I rebuilt and cleaned the carbs thoroughly. Fuel is getting into the engine. I took the carbs off again and recleaned them but there were no plugged jets.
4. the plugs are new. I couldnt find NGK so I had to get autolite 4173

5. now I am reading the forum and I am doubting myself that maybe I am off 1 tooth on the cam chain? I am sure I did it right but I cant figure why the engine wont fire.

Some ideas I will try first:
1. find ngk plugs
2. flush out gas and put in new gas (I use fresh gas but the tank was a little dirty even though I cleaned it)
3. buy new points.

Ok so anyone have any suggestions? If this doesnt work then I will pull the engine and recheck the cam chain... but I hate to do that if I dont have to.
Thanks
GARY

Hello Gary,

I would definatley rid of the autolite plugs. Renew the points and condensor. Trim back the plug wires at the coil end and the plug cap end, or just fit new wires.

Have you verifired good compression?

If you doubt your tank cleanliness , run it off a clean fuel source.

Did you service the petcock?

Should still run at one tooth off. Even if not correct.

Thanks for the support,
I did service the petcock and trim and renew the spark plug wires.
I will order new points and condensor and buy new plugs.

Is it normal to have the left point gap to be smaller than spec using eds formula?

To be honest I never checked after setting. Maybe some fine tuning would get it closer.

Do a quick check to verify you are not 180 degrees off time which can happen if you get the points cam off 180 degrees. Side that fires should have both valves closed and piston just off TDC.

What is the easiest way to do that? I checked that the piston was TDC with the fly wheel at F mark. But whats the easiest way to check the valves are closed? Do I remove the valve caps?
