Spedometer Repairs?
Spedometer Repairs?Hey guys, I got my resto done trhis weekend, and am already working out small bugs, one being my spedo. Its in pristine shape comeseticaly, but something inside must be gummed up, it is super slow to resopond, and peaks out about 25mph.....this is after I am goping down the road about 5 miles already.
Has anyone sucessfully repaired one of these? Can they be taken apart without destroying it? Paul I just did my CL speedo in August. It was the first time I've opened up a sealed unit like this.
Before you dig into your speedo, first see if the shaft that is driven by the cable turns freely. That could be your problem, right there. I had an S90 speedo that was sluggish and rather than open it up, I dripped (not sprayed) a few drops of lock lubricant into the cable shaft area. The one I used appears to be a blend of a solvent, a light oil and graphite. Then with a small screwdriver, I rotated the shaft back and forth to work the lube into the shaft. It got better and better. When it felt like I thought it should, I put a small finishing nail in my cordless drill and spun up the speedo. It worked like a champ and still does. I believe that in Gman's post there is a recommendation to soak just the tail section, with that same shaft in a small cap of synthetic oil. Oil will be wicked up into the bearing. That may work for you as well. I would try that process next time I get a sticky speedo before I open it up. Please post your results here so others can learn from your experience. Good luck, Rob
Well, I had no luck. I actually cut an access port in the case (since you can't see it installed) to clean and lubercate. The wierd part is the way it drives the needle. Its almost like a flywheel in a cover that lets friction "slip". I noticed that a heavy oil it read way too high, and a light oil read way low. I just live with it reading 25 max speed.
BTW, the odometer works perfectly. Paul The "flywheel" is actually a magnetic "eddy current" drive which works against a small spring.
The gap between the aluminium cup and the magnet (inside the cup) should be dry and clean with no oil between. It sounds like you have a dry needle bearing. Be careful how much lube you put in the speedo as it will evaporate and condense onto the speedo dial. Here's a picture of the inside of a CL speedo.
