resetting points plate

Post by allthumbs » Mon Jun 02, 2008 9:54 pm

Ok, granted I'm an idiot. no need to harp on that point.

I had the timing perfect-nearly. using Loud M's recipe and Clymers manual I got it pretty damn close to perfect. The misfiring had stopped. went for a ride and put the bike to bed.

morning came, i started it up. timing was off. I revisited the two sets of instructions. Messed it up good. the 12 volt light on the alligator clip is on all the time, not just at F. the timing plate is now way off, The right point at it's widest open point is hugely gaped, at T it's ok, but when I move it it goes off. Threads are stripping, it's a mess

same for left.

How do I reset the timing plate and then start over????

Timing

If the threads are stripping, you'll have to address that problem first or you'll never get the point plate to hold it's position.

I would take point plate off the bike and repair the threads with helicoils or keenserts it room allows.

Once the threads are repaired, retune per Ed's recipe.

Thanks Gary,

the threads were actually the screws of the points. replaced them.

my problem is getting the plate back to a good starting point to start over the gapping. If I gap the right points at T to .014" then when I move the rotor so that the lobes on the cam are highest, the gap is much larger.

when I attach the alligator clip getup the light is pon all the time- that is until my battery gives out

the first time I did it the gap at the highest lobe point could be .014" as well at at T. now It's all a wreck and off.

am I overlooking a simple reset/reposition to beginning step?

I own a CA77, but I use a light too on my single points. If the light is on all the time then the points are not opening at all.The points plate is slotted right and posssibly try putting it in the center of the slots to start.

Don't gap the points at T, gap them when they are open the widest. Then use the timing light to set points plate timing, and lastly gap left points with timing light. Hope this makes sense.

Thumbs,

It does not matter where the plate is when you start, set your right points at .014 when the cam lobe opens your right points the farthest they will go. Then move your points plate until the light just come on when the pointer and rotor is on "F" (cam lobe pointer straight down) do the rest per LM's instructions.

And like Loud Mouse said if the light is always on then your points are never closing. Pay attention as things change once you tighten those screws down down. That goes for the plate and the points.

Good luck!
