Sky high idle!

Post by Caryn83 » Thu Mar 31, 2011 7:32 pm

Hello! First time poster, but been reading and researching since the begining of the year. My 1964 CA77 has finally been running (with electric start!), but as soon as it turns over, it revs so high it's going shake it apart. I was worried about the odd throttle set-up on this bike, but the slide in the carb seems to move freely. Any suggestions/thoughts are welcome!

Simple things first. Idle screw in to far? Remove the rubber tube to the air cleaner and make sure the slide is bottoming out. Incorrect cable routing?

idle screw all the way out. slide bottoms out and retracts. cable should be routed correctly. when i bought it from p.o., it popped right off, and i haven't rerouted it.

Have you had the slide out? It's possible that the slide is inserted 180 deg. out. That will make the idle scream.Ask me how I know!

Can you post a pic looking into the bell of the carb at the slide with the throttle closed?

Second that.

It's a classic mistake, it probably has happend a few time for everybody who works with old carb. engine's !

When you have the carb slide in your hands, always put the 'long' slide-cut away from you, or, the little cut out at where your idle adjust screw is.
