New Texas titles probems

Post by cadman » Thu Oct 10, 2013 5:33 pm

The Dream I have been working on does not have a title. Texas normally allows a "bonded" title so I have been trying to get one. As of September 1 if the vehicle does not show up on the Texas data base it is considered an "out of state vehicle" and you MUST have a title. .

I have spent two months back and forth with DVM. Today I was told, by the Tax Assessor, it would take a judges decision to get a title. The judge said to get a attorney to draw up papers so he could decide what to do.

At one time, prior to Sept. 1, a County Tax Collector could make these decisions but they currently decline to get involved. This is new to the judges so most of them are not sure what to do.

If you are in Texas beware - Does anyone have a solution for this?

Anyone in the market for a cheap restores Dream??

Is there anyway to get it registered in an easier state and then transfer the title or registration to TX by "selling it - Relative or friend to you? In NY it was pretty easy for me. I Needed a Sales Agreement (for tax determination), tracing by the police of the vin and insurance. With that, I Received my transferable registration. I would think I could sell my bike to a resident of TX and the paperwork would transfer, no? Perhaps a relative in an adjacent state could register it and then "sell" it to you?

I have used a title service in the past. The bike must be over a certain age, and the title service "buys" it from you, then registers it in a non-title state, transfers the registration to you with a letter explaining that this registration constitutes a title in that state ( letter is from a court in that state). You then use this to title the bike in your state. It was about $100 or so then, but that was a long time ago. They looked at me real funny at the license bureau, but I did get a title. Dont know if this is still available.

Well the local DMV ladies have gotten to know me well. Finally one of them called another DMV lady at the main office. As it turns out this lady said since I started the process in early August, prior to the Sept 1 change in rules, they should be able to follow the "old" rules in my case.

So she said she will mail me a "Rejection Letter' which is the document that is required to get a bonded title. So far now it seems I am home free. We will see what next weeks mail brings.

So got my rejection letter and got a bond today - $90.00 - off to DMV on Monday.

Definitely will not buy another bike in Texas without title info,.
