Starter Clutch question.......

Post by brcree » Mon Oct 29, 2012 3:39 pm

I have this situation going in the Eng forum as well. When starting: (69 305) I hear a loud CLACKING/KNOCKING sound as it tries to start. When it is running the sound is not there. I was told it might be the starter clutch. I have removed it and taken a look inside it. All the small parts are there, and yes they do fall out. If the small springs a weak will it cause the clutch to make this loud clacking noise I'm hearing?...Thanks for any help.

I think they are available from HONDA.
If not Hoosier Tom had some a while back.
If the rollers are not damaged no reason to replace.
Terry at Western Hills Honda would be my choice for these parts. .........lm

I bought the cups, rollers and springs right from my local HONDA dealer six months ago. Make sure to fish out any fragments of broken springs that are almost certainly still lurking in the body of the starter clutch before you try to put it back together.

You will need to rotate the entire assembly clockwise when trying to get the rollers to go back into their little hiding spots and the clutch seated onto the starter sprocket. This means that you will need to start the rotor's slot for the keyway about 1.5-2 hrs. before the keyway to achieve simultaneously starter clutch and keyway seating.
