Speedo-Odometer repair
Speedo-Odometer repairthe speedo on my Scrambler works fine but the odometer does not register mileage. I suspect the gear itself needs to be replaced.
Has anyone out there had their speedo/odo repaired? Is there someplace on the web to buy odo gears or someplace to send unit for repair that anyone has used and had success with? 1967 CL77

If you are feeling bold enough, go find a post by gman that will get you through the dis-assembly part of your speedo. It is really pretty easy to do and when you find the faulty part, I should be able to help you out with a part to fix it yourself. At the same time it would be in your best interest to clean and lube the main bearing at the same time. Then you can pm me your address for shipment. Also you may find that a repair would be a simple one. There are places to send these things but you will have to find the post that lists one. RW
thanks. I will definetly look into this. I did find a few places to send the speedo for repair. I emailed 2 of them. One said he could rebuild it in 7-10 days for $250. The other one said 2 weeks for a price of $125. I like your idea of me fixing it myself, with your help.

Your speedo is exactly the same as mine. First you have to carefully prise off the mount ring and it's rubber cushion. Be careful as it will be glued to the body of the speedo and these are unobtainable now especially in the hooter areas of the USA. Once you have detached this bit you will get to the chrome bezel underneath. After that my post should help, but if you need more pic or help, please shout. Rustywrench has some spares and I also have some spare speedo parts if you get stuck. Take your time easing off the chrome bezel. It is possible to get it off without any damage but you have to be very patient and not rush it. After that, the insides are just simple mechanics, only smaller ;-) Go easy on the lube as it will evaporate and condense on the glass. While the speedo is apart, take a little time to gently wash the dial in warm soapy water. You will be surprise how good it looks after the brown film is cleaned away. G-man, your explanation is very helpful. I'm concerned about removing the rubber ring as I accidentally bumped an edge and it sort of pealed up. I'm afraid the whole thing will crumble if I try to take it off. Should I try soaking it to make it a little more pliable? If yes, what would you suggest I use? Soapy water? A light oil?

2006 VT750DCB All of mine have come away easily. I wouldn't recommend soaking in any kind of solvent but a thin blade of some sort, say a cut down mini hacksaw blade or a modelling knife, eased in from underneath should free it. There are a number of posts here from guys who have made replacements or repairs to the rubber. It's just an anti-vibration mount for the speedo body but it's exposed so has to look nice.
