Spoke thread chasingSpoke thread chasingI am going to have several sets of old spokes from my 1964 and 1965 CA77s replated (Cd) and clear chromated. I am wondering if I will have to chase the threads on the spokes and nipples after plating. Appear to be 4mmx.65 by my pitch gauge. The .60 is too coarse. Any idea what the pitch is? Note: the ones I am measuring are from the 1965, have not disassembled the 64.
Funny, I just asked the same question on another forum, but did not receive a useful reply. The diameter appears to be 3.5mm on my spokes, and the pitch is between 0.6 and 0.7. But I don't thing there is such a thing as a 0.65mm pitch die. Someone told me that spoke threads are not cut, but are rolled. So we may be out of luck. Usually with just a single plating you are OK, but mine had to be redone after the first failed attempt, and came back too large for the nipples. I may have to discard them. By the way, nickel plating works well for the spokes (as well as the nipples), it is bright without being garish like chrome and lasts much longer than zinc or cadmium. --Randall
I doubt whether you will need to deal with the threads but rolling is the preferred method as the thread is much stronger - proved by the aircraft industry early last century. The thread sizes will usually be Imperial (TPI not pitch in mm) even on Japanese bikes.
One of these would help if you needed to attend to them. ttp://www.weldtite.co.uk/productdetail/282/pa ... chine.aspx G '60 C77 '60 C72 '62 C72 Dream '63 CL72
