CRAZY SPEEDOOO

I have a 1967 CB77, I bought a new speedometer cable and hooked it up for the first time since owning the bike. everthing seemed to be working fine for the first 20 miles, but then it started to bounce wildly, then peg out to 110 mph and make a mild grinding noise. Has anyone had this problem, and/or know what the problem is. I appreciate any help.

Sounds like the bearing on the input to the speedo has dried out so that your new cable winds up then goes 'twang' as it gives way - whizzing the needle around. You need to take the speedo off and turn the input with a small flat screwdriver to see if it turns freely. If not, try a little lube. You may have killed the spring in the speedo, like the one in the picture below.

If so you need either a good speedo repairer or a replacement. The pictures are from a dismantled speedo. You don't need to go this far just to twiddle the input shaft. If you spin the shaft in the right direction, the speedo needle will move briefly. If it's still reading 110, then it's all over.

It seems to turn freely and its not stuck at 110 so I am going to try to lube it up. Thanks for advice!

Might be worth greasing the speedo cable too. Especially if it was a NOS one.

I took it apart and put some lite oil on the bearing and spring and greese on the cable. it works great. Went for a 25 mile ride and it was perfect. thanks so much for the tip!
