where do I acquire replacement screws JIS for a 64 305

The most common JIS thread on these is the 5mm.

Look for a tap 5mm x 0.9pitch.

Be careful as many sell them as 5mm x 0.8 pitch, but this is modern ISO metric thread.

There was someone down south, Florida way I think, that was selling full sets of JIS screws for the 305 engine a couple of years ago. I searched my email but couldn't find him. It might be worthwhile to do some more internet searching. His prices were quite reasonable.

I looked at their website, but didn't see any JIS taps. Does anyone know where to get JIS taps? On of the threads on my engine block is all gummed up.

JIS screws are normal metric diameter (M5, M6, etc), the head however, is not a standard "Phillips" like usual.

It looks like you are talking a M5 tap for the dynamo cover, but the pitch doesn't appear to be what I would consider the "standard" pitch for that size.

Hi LM. The block itself should have no JIS threads. They're all 6mm or 8mm. Unless I'm missing an oddball somewhere?

Quick and dirty home-made taps:

File two flats 180° apart on the threads of a bolt or screw.
Carefully remove any burrs without rounding any corners on the flattened threads.
Heat bolt/screw red hot and drop into oil/water. Bolt/screw is now very hard.
You now have a nice home-made tap!

This technique can also be used to make chisels, punches and other tools where added hardness is desired.
