Hi,

When I'm traveling on a bike or do a long distant ride I take a few spares with me, among those are two standard inner cables (small and large diameter) and those little end caps with screws.

Is that Larry the cable guy?............sorry, couldn't resist!

Never had one break on me, but know several who have.
There are compact cable repair kits out there....maybe Motion Pro or others.

A bit of a stretch (pun intended).... here's a shot I love of Skip Van Leeuwen when he was a novice around 1960 TT racing at Ascot with a broken throttle cable. He had a big lead when it broke and was able to finish and win pulling on the broken end of the cable! He and Eddie Mulder were West Coast pro TT specialists that used to give the factory guys fits at the National TT's in the 60's.

I was on my 600 bandit and pulled into my driveway and up to my garage door and pulled in the clutch and the cable snapped... I grabbed a fistful of brake and shut it down before I hit the door.

The routing of the cable on those bikes had a spot where water collected right above the engine where the heat was highest. It was common for the clutch cable to break in that spot.

Well I have had All cables brake in the past but the last was not the cable it was the clutch handle on a CA77.
Got real lucky on as it broke in the driveway as I was leaving.
The problem was the cable was wrong been using it for the past two years and I have a beefed up clutch so the old lever just broke.
Someone called me an Ape for braking it LOL Truth is my left hand is much stronger now then my right hand.
Correct cable on bike now and new clutch handle.

I dont take any cables with me I just check them out from time to time. Now I do take some points with me if I am going on a long ride.

Where do you find those? They could come in handy. I keep 1 throttle and clutch and 2 gear cables under my seat on my '66 vespa. Vespa cables are all universal so carrying some inners is no big deal. I didn't know anyone made those for larger bikes.

And yes, I've broken all of those in the past, that's why I keep em under the seat!!

Broken cables

Post by Hippykid » Sat Feb 26, 2011 1:47 am

Yes any rider who has alot of riding time has broke a cable-I cant believe i havent heard anybody bring up my trick I learned from an old biker years ago-Keep an extra spark plug screw tip (from the top of some sparkplugs) to slide over a broken cable and mash it with a pair of vice grips to repair an otherwise useless cable to get you home...Heck I put one on my 68 XLCH and it lasted almost a year...
