Painting over powder coat

Post by Norm » Thu Sep 27, 2007 8:13 pm

I had the front fender and air cleaner covers powdercoated silver on my CB77. However they did not come out the best (blotchy) and the finish seems a little soft. A friend is going to paint the rear fender using the silver paint numbers taken from this web site. I am thinking of asking him to repaint the powder-coated items too, but don't know if it will work. Can the just be sanded with fine grit paper and painted? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Norm; just seen your query - if I'm not too late already, in the past, when powder coating was not particularly glossy, I used to do just what you are proposing and none of the paints I used, e.g. cellulose, enamel etc. had any bad effect on the powder- just gave a very deep, tough, glossy finish. Don't know about modern solvents but powder is pretty inert - try a small out-of-sight area first.
Cheers, Pete.
