insurance?
insurance?I was just wondering what others are doing as far as motorcycle insurance. I usually do historical plates and insurance to save the MCCA cost. But theres the risk of getting pulled over if it you are not using it for anything related to bike shows, parades or events. I haven't gotten pulled over yet. I usually don't ride that much on my vintage bikes since they were a bit too small. I may ride more this year with the SuperHawk since it is a bit bigger than most of the little twins I've had in the past.

I use Progressive for my daily rider (82 CB650). Since my CP is not yet running I'm not carrying anything on it, but I priced insurance for it with them, and it was the same - $78 a year for liability only. I think if the bike is older than 85 they have a flat rate. Obviously it will be more if you add all the bells and whistles like comp, collision and UIM/UM, but they're the most reasonable I've found. When I first got the CB650 I used Dairyland insurance (they don't offer it in my state anymore) and it was ridiculously cheap, something like $49 a year. Maybe check and see if they're available in your area as well. I'm a 38 year old woman, so I might have a cheaper insurance cost than you if you're a guy in your 20's.
I use Progressive as well, and they've been great. Some 'classic' insurance companies have a mileage restriction for old bikes, so if you plan on riding your bike more than 2,000 miles or so per year, you'll want to check that out. As well, I don't know how those insurance companies deal with modified bikes, but Progressive is pretty flexible. Geez, maybe they should be paying me to say this stuff!
But are you both setting it up as historical/vintage with appropriate historical/vintage plates? How's the risk factor where you are when it comes to riding. Here in MI, it's supposed to be event related only. I set up the insurance this way to save money but it determines how you register it. So that's the other part of my query.

Also, I'm using Progressive. $119 as a historical vehicle (no mcca). MCCA adds another $100+.

Mine's tagged historic (modern plates), and 'historic' is supposed to be meant for shows, parades, traveling to and from the mechanic's etc, and 'occasional use' (no particular definition of this term). It's not meant to be your primary vehicle, which mine of course is not. However, I made a point to call the MVA here in Maryland and specifically asked if there was a mileage restriction, and they said no. I think it would only be a problem if this was the only vehicle you owned, and you drove it every day to work etc.
I use American Collectors insurance for both my bikes and have been very pleased so far.
http://www.americancollectors.com/ I have State Farm for my autos and home but they were totally unhelpful and worse than useless when I asked them about insuring my old Hondas. They don't care if it's a '63 CB77 driven 300 miles per year or a 2010 Hayabusa driven 30,000, it's practically the same rate.
