speedo noise and eratic function
speedo noise and eratic functionmy speedo and drive head have been acting up lately, at first it was a whinig sound every now and then coming from the front wheel , then i had noticed the speedo drive head at the front wheel was starting to over rotate causing the spedo cable to bend and bind. in problem solving i have temperarily stiffened up the speedo cable at the point of where it binds because of the over rotating drive head at the front wheel. i have also lubed up the inner speedo cable. now with the drive head unable to rotate around and bind at the front wheel i find the speedo needle bounces and jumps up to the maximum speed while creating a terrible whine from the speedo unit cluster. anyone experience this? how do i keep the drive unit at the wheel from over rotating? what should i be looking at to remedy the speedo needle bouncing and maxing out at slow speeds. is the problem the drive unit at the wheel, the cable or the speedo unit itself? any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks
Re: speedo noise and eratic functionIf ya have the drive installed correctly the adjustment is made by adjusting the axle nut (loosen the tightening bolt left side) and spin the wheel until the drive just floats rather than rotate. Be sure there is plenty of lube in the drive unit. ......lm
When I had a similar problem I was advised to remove the inner cable entirely to avoid possible damage to speedo unit since I was planning to keep riding it and it took awhile to sort out problem with the drive.
After following LM's directions to loosen clamp bolt on left side and tighten the axle nut to hold drive unit firmly where it wants to be, you can look down in hole where cable attaches and see the part that drives the cable turning when you spin the front wheel, assuming you've got the tabs and notches aligned correctly. Since you say speedo jumping happens at low speed, any jerkiness in drive unit might reveal itself. My understanding is that jumping is often caused by binding cable that spins slow when it binds then spins fast as it gets more torque wound up on drive side of bind and releases. Hope this helps, good luck...Lee '62 CB77. "It's a rider."
FIXED
thanks to all your input i was able to fix this problem. i took off the drive gear at the wheel, cleaned it, lubed it, put it on correctly, tightened axle nut properly, lubed the inner speedo cable, and now she is running as it should. thanks for all the advice in such a timely and helpful manner.
