Getting "collector" plates in ohio

Post by AWILLIAMS64 » Sun Sep 14, 2008 12:51 am

Has anyone in Ohio got collector plates for their old bikes? i thought about it since i will not be riding it every day and i called and they said i could only ride it on holidays and parades. anyone know any different? she didnt really seem to know what i was talking about. I see cars all the time with these plates. I found out you only have to buy them once and never have to pay again so that would be a plus/.

Wow, I took a look on the BMV site out of curiosity and you're right -- it really doesn't say when you can ride the bike.

I found the application here http://www.bmv.ohio.gov/pdf_forms/4803.pdf
and the instructions here http://bmv.ohio.gov/vehicle_registratio ... plates.htm but none of them mention when you can ride it.

I have collector plates in Wisconsin and I had to submit a VIN of a daily driven car for each licensed driver in my household. The only limitation is I can't drive it in January.

You can see all clear details for Wisconsin collector plates here: http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/drivers/ve ... llecto.htm

I knew of the restrictions for historic autos in Ohio and assumed the same for bikes. Let me know if anyone hears different. I see cars all the time but that doesn't mean they are driving legally. I supposed there could be a ton of excuses if by chance you get stopped by the locals.... "just taking it up for gas before the next big parade next week officer..."

i had collector plates on one of my corvettes for years, never got questioned about them.
drove it most days when it was warm out.
i'd go for antique plates, i couldn't wait that long before i rode mine. they say it takes about a week to get them.

I thought collector's plates and historical plates were the same thing. But NOT.
Here's the "Historical" application: http://bmv.ohio.gov/pdf_forms/4806.pdf
Model year plates: http://bmv.ohio.gov/pdf_forms/4853.pdf and Historical plate info http://bmv.ohio.gov/vehicle_registration/historical.htm You learn the most interesting things through this forum.

i talked to the bmv today and the lady was really nice. She said i could get historical plates and they were $24.50 and they were good for 50 years w/o ever having to renew them. Said it takes about 14 days but the give you a temp tag to use until then., she said it was for riding on holidays, parades and to shows. then she said......and if you happen to be riding it in one of these days, just make sure, when you park the bike, someone may see it. then it is in its own show! the lady was hilarious. If all bmv people were this nice.

I have been running a year correct 1961 Ohio plate on my BMW for years now and never had any problems. I have to admit that I break the rules regularly by riding to work and also where ever and when ever I want to. Funny thing is, people still ask me what year the bike is after looking it over in a parking lot.

I would like to run a year correct plate for my 66 CB77 also, however seeing as the bike was first titled in 1968, that is what year is on the title so I can only run either a historic plate or a 68 plate. I don't want to have explain to the few people who know the difference why I think my bike is 68.
