CB77 Missing on Ebay

Post by carabener » Sat Dec 19, 2020 4:00 am

Hi,
Has anyone noticed the missing lack of CB77's on ebay in the last year, and perhaps have an explanation for this phenom? EG Have Buyers been backing out of purchases or something crazy like that? Or complaining that bikes aren't perfect or something? A mystery to me. Ideas?
Have these Phil Shilling 'Gold value bikes' finally become rarer like Ducati Desmos from the '70's?
Thanks

There was a nice 67 CB77 on eBay about two months ago, California bike. Bidding was Ended at $5,000 before the auction ended; probably because seller accepted an offline offer.

It may be because CB77 values are Down over the past year and sellers are holding out for an upswing. (Source: Hagerty):
Value in June 2019 for 67 CB77:
#1 $10,000
#2 $8,000
Value in June 2020:
#1 $9,300
#2 $5,000

On the other hand, CL77 values are Up. (Source: Hagerty):
Hagerty Value in June 2019 for 67 CL77:
#1 $7,000
#2 $5,500
Value in June 2020:
#1 $10,100
#2 $6,700

Hagerty is only one source. I didn't check NADA or others; nor did I check CA77. All of these sites are quite subjective; Hagerty says it bases values on recent auction activity, among other things.

That's terrific if you crave CA's but, since I bought my first Honda 305 Super Hawk CB77 in 1963 there's only one ancient bike of interest for me, the CB77. CA's, Honda 50's, RD350/400 Yamaha's, Suzuki Water Whale GT750's, Triumph Bonneville T120R's, and Ninja GPZ900's and a slew of other bikes were fun but...

"This web site is devoted to the legendary Honda Superhawk - model CB77. Undoubtedly, you have your own reasons for being here. As for me, this motorcycle holds special significance in that it is the first riding bike I've owned."

"The most significant post 1950's motorcycle? Honda's CB77 Super Hawk" Gordon Jennings article 'Not Just Disco'

"In a world of perfect justice 305 CB77's would be gold chip bikes."

"Phil Shilling's Pic-Six Best bikes ever...#1... Honda 305 CB77."

Cycle World article "The Hawk Above The Crud Below"

Although sometime soon it would be fun to own a post 2014 Suzuki Hayabusa (better brakes). Just for the freeway kicks...1/4 mile 9.47 152 mph.

Yes, I do comprehend people have interests in other bikes, and that there may be parallel Universes... I just never understood them :)

I actually don't crave CA's, even though I do have one I bought while looking for a CB since it was close as I could find at the time. I spent every penny to my name on a brand new 1967 CB77, and I'm still looking for it today!

The Dreams are unique looking......but $24,600???????....that would buy how many nice Super Hawks?

My context was relative to prices going down, and I've NEVER seen a Dream bring that much!

Too right - that is a hell of a lot of money. Great looking bike, but way too much money for me to even consider.
Thanks.

To round out the discussion, below are 2019 and 2020 values for 67 CA77:

Value in June 2019:
#1 $12,000
#2 $10,000

Value in June 2020:
#1 $10,000
#2 $6,000

That $24K Dream looks awesome; the buyer must have a special reason to spend that kind of money!
