Uh oh...
64' Superhawk. I was riding to work today and my transmission locked up on me. First it was oddly "in gear" when I shifted to neutral and then I tried to shift it back and it suddenly STUCK. It was quite a shock to be in traffic and not be able to push or move the bike at all! Someone was kind enough to stop and help me inch the bike to the side of the road. I called Dave's Cycle Transport but he couldn't tow the bike because it wouldn't move. Luckily the master link was in view so I pulled the chain off and pushed it home.
I can't shift at all and it's locked in gear. When I hold in the clutch the engine will run with the starter button, but the rear wheel is totally locked and the kickstarter won't engage either. When I release the clutch the engine stops and the rear wheel is still locked. Can't even push the bike to turn the engine over. It's totally locked. It looks like I'm going to have to pull everything apart, which is not something I feel capable of-- my garage is basically for storage and light maintenance, not for pulling an engine apart.
I am very lucky this didn't happen on the freeway!
Geez, what do I do now?

Re: Transmission Locked!
I saw this coming 312 hits back.
Take it out.
Get some parts books.
Get some tools.
Now comes the hard part.
It's a machine and you will be required to use common sense to work on it. ..................lm

Ed is good here. you need to have learned more about this machine. you can't (usually) come to a stop in fourth gear and just toggle down to neutral. It's better to scroll down while rolling. If it locks up, usually you can (on the side of the road), rock the bike back and forth while upshifting the shift arm. this will find a gear and you will be good to go. they all(mostly) do this, especially when hot. I have found, on rebuilding these things that if you take up the end play in the trans main shaft, this problem goes away.
Good luck
