Like many, I've been enjoying spring here in the Midwest. I took my 67 Dream to my son's soccer game this morning and had a heck of a time finding gears. I've only had the bike since December and don't know it's history. I did replace the clutch cable.
Here's what I'm seeing, when I first leave on a ride, I'm able to find all gears and neutral. After a couple of miles and stops, I can't find neutral or first. This happened with every stop on my ride today. So today I decided to take a look. I removed the cover and looked everything over. I'm no expert, but nothing looked out of place. The one thing I did notice was the shifter mechanism "fork" wasn't engaging with what I'm guessing is the drum(?)(sorry for my lack of correct terms). I could push on that fork to make it engage the little tits and could get the trans to shift thru. I removed the clutch and the shifter mechanism to look for any sign of defect, again, nothing looked bent or warped.
What's my next step? I still have the cover off, so if there is something obvious I missed, I can check immediately.

Hi Ian - I would say that your clutch is dragging. You could try the following: Run both cable adjusters in all the way, then back out the one at the handlebar end a couple turns. This will lower the actuator lever inside the right case as much as possible. Now loosen the adjuster bolt and turn the adjuster clockwise until it stops, then lock it down. This will give you maximum disengagement on the clutch. If it slips, you can turn the handlebar adjuster in a turn.
Other things that can limit actuation is a bent clutch lever that hits the grip prematurely and a worn adjuster. Good luck! -48
