I have a 1968 CL77 and although it is running well there have been a couple of issues coming up. I haven't put many miles on it these last couple of years but when I ride it mades a noise from the transmission. Mostly noticeable as I decelerate. Standing still it is quiet.
I have read where others may have this same issue and have called the noise a grind, maybe that is the same thing I am hearing. The faster the rpms, the louder it gets. The kick starter has developed a problem where it stays up in position when not running, I kick down to start and it just stays down. The engine will start and I have to manually pull it up and put something around the lever arm to keep it from falling.
When the engine quits the kick starter will stay in the up position. I have read where some of the problems with this grinding noise is the bearings on the kick starter shaft. The engine lower cases need to be split and the bearings replaced or it will eventually hurt my transmission gears.
Has anyone else had this problem? How much ($) are the bearings? Anyone recommend an actual good repair manual. I have an old Clymer and it just doesn't cut it.
Thanks to everyone and I appreciate all of the great advice I have gotten in the past. This forum has saved me a lot of time and aggravation.

Transmission going South? It's not so much the bearings but what they do to the kickstarter shaft. The kickstarter shaft supports the gearbox mainshaft through a set of rollers and this is where they wear into the shaft.
If you can find a new shaft that will be great but you may have to get it built up and reground if you cannot find a replacement. It is number 18 in the link.... http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cl77-scrambl ... ml#results I have a PDF parts manual that I can share if you PM me your email. G '60 C77 '60 C72 '62 C72 Dream '63 CL72

Could be the noise is the kick starter pawl ratcheting because the shaft is not all the back in the retracted position. Did you have the cover off recently? If so, did you wind up the kickstarter spring before you replaced the cover?
