Repair to front fork sliders

Post by DavidK » Mon Sep 25, 2006 2:21 am

I have just repaired 3 pairs of fork sliders that had a long bolt screwed into the top mudguard (fender) mount. I used a hydraulic bench rated at 450 kg to pull the tube straight out of the slider. There was no rust inside the slider and the small dent from the long bolt wasn't too deep.
A straight pull did not damage the lower brass bush on the tube.
I carefully used a small grinder on a flexible shaft to remove the high spot. Don't worry if you make that area slightly larger diameter than the rest of the slider. If you measure up carefully you will be able to work out the highest point that the bottom brass bush rubs on - it's not very close to the bolt damage.
Just make sure you grind away from the section where the bush rubs.
This technique probably won't work if a long bolt has been put in with great force and caused serious damage, but it allowed me to keep my old sliders.
It works for both 1961 and later type of steel sliders.
